The Golden Compass is a movie in theaters that plays a huge gamble. The film is fantasy tale of mystery and magic which contains a high profile cast with special effects and more than a $150 million budget. The film was rated number 1 on the box office.
The film contains a huge source of controversy, as it is based in the trilogy of novels written by militant atheist Philip Pullman.
Bill Donahue a member of the Catholic League has been one of the leading voices at the forefront of the opposition campaign against the film. Donahue states that the books “denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the virtues of atheism”. Mr. Donahue called on all Catholics to avoid anything to do with the film.
Ted Baehr, the head of the Christian Film and Television Commission, recently appeared on an interview with Fox news and stated that while he hasn’t seen the movie, he had read the atheist trilogy.
“We have to see the film before we make (any) evaluation,” Mr. Baehr said. But he warned, “Children who buy into this are going to be trapped in a sad, desperate world.”
The cause for Baehr’s concern comes directly from Pullman’s own words, which were reported on the Sydney Morning News in 2003, “My books are about killing God.”
Mr. Pullman seems to have an evangelistic fervor regarding his non-Christian beliefs, having participated in series of DVD’s designed for British children titled “Why Atheism.” The series touts itself as being a “comprehensive introduction to the secular philosophies of Atheism and Humanism.” Pullman is also one of six people featured on the DVD titled “Do Not Believe in God.”
Christians in a Secular Culture
Christians have every right to stand against the world of Hollywood.
Although Christians do not have much favorable treatment from Hollywood and its stars, Christians do have a vote and that vote is inside their wallets.
Neither, I or my family will waste our time and money on “The Golden Compass: and I encourage all Christians to do the same. I also hope that all pastors and priest as leaders of God’s church will do the same within their churches, not in a knee-jerk way, but in an intelligent, reasoned manner that leads our stand to the Bible.
As a reminder, we will all be judged in the “Day of Judgment” for all the things that we do and say. Pullman will be judge for staining the hearts of children and families and he will pay a hefty price. After all, Christ gives a clear warning when it comes to children and leading them astray from His love.
James 1:15 tells us, when desire is conceived it gives birth to sin. Let’s prayerfully do our best to help our children keep their hearts and minds on Jesus Christ, amid this world of many temptations.

Pastor J,
As always, our common Latin heritage of STAUNCH CHRISTIAN identity is holding together. THANK GOD that men such as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia also share our Christian worldview so the U.S. is SAFE for another GENERATION, BUT as this blog righty notes, the enemies of the cross of Jesus Christ are quite pernicious. Fortunately, evil is just stupid. These movies do not hold the POWER of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that Narnia and LORD of the Rings does.
Love in Jesus Christ,
Rob J. (a.k.a. "Gandolf ;-)")
